Serving Christ in the heart of Hanwell and beyond

About St Mellitus with St Mark

St. Mellitus with St. Mark is the Anglican parish church for the heart of Hanwell. The church has been a landmark in the area for nearly 100 years, and we aim to be every bit as significant as people in the community.

We describe our mission as “to serve Christ in the heart of Hanwell, and beyond”. Our aim is to do what Jesus commanded after His glorious resurrection: to make disciples. This means that what we do ‘in church’ should be focused on helping us be disciples ‘in the real world’ - not just on how we are on Sunday morning!

We are the only Anglican Saint Mellitus church in London.  Mellitus was the first Bishop of London, consecrated in 604. As part of the celebrations of the 1400th anniversary of the London Diocese the Bishop of London preached at our Patronal Festival on 24th April 2004 and you can find out a lot more about Mellitus by reading his excellent sermon.

About our Sunday services

Our main Sunday service is a 10:00am Parish Communion service combining traditional elements (such as liturgy, robed choir and hymns) with more contemporary elements (especially in some of the music).  In term time there is also a full range of activities for school-age children which we call Allsorts.

We meet to pray at 8:30am and there is also a said mass in the Lady Chapel at 8am.

Click on this link for a full calendar of services and events.

Copies of sermon notes are available, as well as some copies of sermon audio files to listen online or download to your ipod.

Midweek activities

There is a usually a midweek mass on Wednesdays at 10am in the Lady Chapel.  The church is open for prayer at midday on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  All are welcome.

Alpha

The Alpha Course consists of a series of talks addressing key issues relating to the Christian faith. There is a light meal together at the beginning of each session which gives people a chance to get to know each other. After each talk we divide into small groups to discuss the topic of the evening, ask questions and express opinions. We then break into small groups over coffee to listen, learn, discuss and discover. And ask anything.

Alpha is a place where no question is too simple or too hostile. Our next Alpha course starts on 21st September.  For more details contact John Hereward at the church office (3067 0035 or office@saintmellitushanwell.org.uk) or Rev. Deborah Chapman (8813 0162).

A wide range of other groups meet during the week, details of some are below:

With more than a million members, the Mothers’ Union is the largest Christian women’s organisation in the world with a distinctive tradition of personal links and relationships worldwide. United by a common commitment to Christian family life, and by the custom of the cycle of midday prayers we are active in our own local communities, in all sorts of ways, fitting our activities to those local priorities and needs. Our Mothers Union meets in the Church Hall every first Wednesday of the month at 11am. For more details, contact Yvonne White (8575 2453).

Being a Brownie is all about having loads of fun and a huge adventure! To be a Brownie you have just got to be a girl aged between seven and 10 years old. Brownies meet together in a Pack most Wednesday evenings 6-8pm. Our Brownie Pack is run by Lynne Henderson and a team of adult leaders. They look after you and make sure you have a great time on your Brownie Adventure. For more details contact Lynne via the church office (020 3067 0035).

Small groups

We have a number of small groups which meet in homes around the parish for Bible Study, fellowship and prayer. For more details, contact the church office on 3067 0035 or office@saintmellitushanwell.org.uk.

Prayer

If you would like prayer, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone, e-mail or the prayer request form where you can enter as much or as little detail as you wish.

Social life

No church would be complete without a range of social activities, and we’re no different. There’s a drama group, St. Mellitus Players, that meets weekly. Then there is a range of occasional events covering everything from BBQs to beetle drives to boat trips.

Details are published from time to time as relevant – see the events calendar.

Local Initiatives

Other organisations we actively support include Christian Aid, Choices crisis pregnancy centre and the Christian environmental organisation, Arocha.

International Links

St Mellitus has a strong link with the Diocese of Kigezi in Uganda. This developed through sending the Sanderson family from St Mellitus to serve in Uganda between 2000-2005.  They were Mission Partners with the Church Mission Society. Rachelle is a Christian GP from Hanwell and she worked in Rugarama Health Centre in Uganda - link http://www.rugaramahospital.org/ a Christian mini-hospital which grew to have 77 in-patient beds and a large work amongst HIV/AIDS patients, as well as malnourished children, premature babies, dental and eye patients. Tom worked in the Church Development Department helping rural communities to establish and sustain small income-generating projects.

A team from St Mellitus visited the Sandersons in Uganda in 2002, and subsequent visits from Rev. John and Janet Hereward (vicar) and the Fletcher family (churchwarden) served to cement the link with Uganda, and the Diocese of Kigezi in particular.

St Mellitus has raised funds for several projects in the Diocese of Kigezi, Uganda, listed below:

60 Concrete Water Tanks for widows

75 bags of cement to construct Rugarama Hospital childrens ward

Floor tiles for St Peter’s Cathedral, Kabale, Uganda

15 Bee-Hives and 400 Honey Jars for Bee-Keeping project

60 Plastic Chairs for church meeting hall

170 Mosquito nets for vulnerable people

October 2001

October 2002

October 2003

October 2004

October 2005

The link with Uganda is ongoing, even though the Sanderson family returned to St Mellitus in July 2005. For example:

  • We are in contact with, and pray for, the staff at Rugarama Health Centre including the new Medical Superintendent from Germany, Dr Christoph Menzel and his family.
  • In February 2006 Rev. Joshua & Flavia Owoyesiga (right), from Kabale, visited St Mellitus and preached at some services.
  • Tom Sanderson is now involved with a charity called Five Talents http://www.fivetalents.org.uk based on Jesus’ parable of the Talents, which teaches us to multiply the gifts given to us. The charity supports small loans programmes in Uganda and other developing countries. Clients can take loans of £30-£300 to boost their small businesses. The loans are re-paid and then loaned again (recycled) to other entrepreneurs over and over again - creating jobs, encouraging self-reliance, and teaching Christian values for business.  To hear Tom’s interview on Premier Radio about Five Talents click here.
  • A short description of Tom and Rachelle’s work in Kabale and Rachelle’s prayer mails can be found here

We are also linked with St George’s in BaghdadSt George’s, among the ancient and hard-pressed churches of Iraq, is a spiritual lifeline for Iraqi Christians who now represent just 2% of the population – around 700,000 people.  Needless to say, it is probably the most dangerous parish in the world, spending half of its budget on security.

In November 2005, the senior leader, his wife (who headed the women’s work there) and his son, also a church worker, were kidnapped and have not been heard of since.  Pastoral contact is maintained through the ministry of Canon Andrew White, licensed as Anglican Priest for Iraq, who visits every month or six weeks but has, while in Iraq, to be confined to the security zone where church workers meet with him.
