I suspect it was my first Mother’s Union meeting here at St.Mellitus where I first got to know Phyllis. She not only chaired the meeting but also quietly got on with all the practical work involved, setting up beforehand and clearing up afterwards. I soon discovered there was a pattern to the way these meetings operated, one that had been developed under Phyllis’s gentle leadership and which served the group well. The pattern generally reflected the church calendar – Harvest, Advent, Lent, Easter with the addition of such annual treats as the strawberry tea.
I then saw a different aspect of Phyllis’s life when I became involved in St.Mellitus players. She was tireless in support of Christine and Andrew whenever a performance was imminent. Running repairs to costumes and doing refreshments were obvious contributions but alongside these practical activities there was a wonderful positive support. This was evident too in the way Phyllis supported all our social events.
This year we as a church have lost three stalwarts, Joyce, Joy and now Phyllis. All three are a constant inspiration and example of humble service and uncomplaining perseverance. Whilst leaving a huge hole in our lives and our life together as church we rejoice that they are now enjoying life in all its fullness.
