Through him all things were made John 1:3

Introduction

After a couple of weeks’ break we are returning to our doctrine series based on the prologue to John’s gospel. Today we are considering one of the most astonishing statements in the whole passage – through him ie Jesus all things were made. In effect John says this three times over. First positively: “Through him all things were made” then negatively “without him nothing was made that has been made” v.3 Then again in v.10 “He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him”. It might not seem so astonishing to us that Jesus made the world, after all we believe that God made the world and that Jesus is God it is therefore quite logical to believe that Jesus made the world. However we have to remember that John knew Jesus first and foremost as a human being. See what is written at the beginning of John’s first letter: “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at, which our hands have touched – this we proclaim concerning the Word of life” 1 John 1:1. As I pointed out in an earlier sermon this is the person against whose chest John leaned at the last supper. Is it not astonishing that this man Jesus made the world?

This morning I want us to try to capture that sense of astonishment. In particular I want us to focus on Jesus, the man who made the world. In our gospel reading from Mark 1:21-28 we read that the crowds were amazed at Jesus. They were amazed at his teaching v.22 and his authority v27. When was the last time you were amazed by Jesus?

In order to try and evoke a sense of amazement I want to lead us in a meditation on the New Testament reading from Colossians 1:15-23

First read it through as written.

Now imaging Jesus reading this to you – putting it into the first person.

If these words were put into the mouth of any other human being they would be considered insane. Only Jesus can be thought of in such terms. Let us worship Him.
